Extended Skills opportunities

  • GP Registrars must undertake 6 months of their training in Extended Skills. 
  • Extended Skills can be undertaken in a general practice setting, and most GP Registrars will complete their Extended Skills in a general practice after they have completed their required 18 months of GP Terms.
  • Extended Skills can, however, be done in other settings, such as hospital or community posts.
  • This page contains details regarding some specific posts in these other settings, for which CSQTC has received information, and which may be suitable for approval as Extended Skills training placements.

The following posts are examples of positions that may be suitable as extended skills training:

Brisbane South Palliative Care Service

  • As at February 2013, Brisbane South Palliative Care Service has two six month positions available for immediate commencement. One position is based at Oxley and the other in the Redlands area. 
  • Further positions may be available from August 2013, on an ongoing basis.
  • The positions offer the opportunity to practice evidence based palliative care and are part of a multidisciplinary service that operates over various environments of care including acute care hospitals, residential and aged care facilities, Palliative Care inpatient units and residential homes.
  • These positions are accredited for the award of the Diploma in Palliative Medicine through the Chapter of Palliative Medicine - RACP (separate applcation and requirement commitments apply).
  • These positions are suitable for approval as Extended Skills training for GP Registrars.  As these positions are community-based Extended Skills positions, GP Registrars must have already completed at least six months (FTE) GP Terms prior to be eligible. RACGP Censor approval may be necessary depending on the GP Registrar's stage of training.

Paediatric Positions – Royal Children's Hospital

  • We are fortunate to be able to assist GP Registrars each year in relation to 6 month terms in Paediatrics at the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH). 
  • During these 6 month placements, GP Registrars will usually get an emergency term and a term in one of the medical specialties (not necessarily general paediatrics). There is an option of a paediatric surgical rotation.
  • These placements have been very positively received in the past and found to give valuable experience and confidence to our GP Registrars.
  • These positions are suitable for approval as Extended Skills training for GP Registrars, for any stage of training. Alternatively, Registrars can also count this 6 month placement towards the Hospital year of training, depending on other terms they have done. Paediatrics at the Royal Children's Hospital is accredited by the Post Graduate Committee Qld, so RACGP Censor approval is not necessary for this post.
  • The number of positions offered by RCH in each half of the year, vary from year to year. For the 2013 training year, there were 2 x 6 month positions available for the second half of 2013.
  • We are uncertain at this stage how many positions will be available in 2014.

  • How to apply for a position:
    • GP Registrars should read the RCH position description as a guide to what is involved in the positions.This will be updated later in 2013, relative to the 2014 positions.
    • Interested GP Registrars will be asked to submit an application consisting of curriculum vitae and covering letter. Applications will need to include names and contact details for 3 referees.
    • Applications should be submitted in the first instance to Dr Nam Tran at CSQTC - please email hlo@csqtc.qld.edu.au or fax (07) 3552 8108. CSQTC will forward all applications to RCH and applications will be assessed by the RCH. The final decision regarding position offers will be made by RCH.
    • Applications will need to be submitted by the advertised closing date (usually August/September each year).

St Vincent's Brisbane - Palliative Care

  • These positions are in Palliative Care and are particularly appropriate for GP Registrars. 
  • Many GP Registrar have undertaken this placement in previous years. 
  • St Vincent's Brisbane has a full-time Trainee Fellow position which will be based at the Hospice Unit and home care service.  It will consist of education sessions at palliative care and oncology clinics and involve mentoring by a specialist. Trainees who successfully complete all of the requirements can be awarded the Clinical Diploma of Palliative Medicine from the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) after their 6 month placement.
  • These positions may be suitable for approval as Extended Skills training for GP Registrars.
  • Applicants for the position do not need to have done any GP Terms, however some previous community experience may be of benefit.
  • This is classified as a hospital-based post, so can be undertaken at any stage of training. RACGP Censor approval for this post may be needed.

Chronic Disease Management - Brisbane South Complex Diabetes Service

  • Inala Primary Care delivers clinical services to a diverse multicultural population at Inala in Brisbane South. The Practice is also an active teaching practice for both students and GP Registrars. Inala Primary Care has expanded its model of care to include broader team care, with additional practice and triage nurses, and a closer working relationship with the Inala community health team. The Centre has developed an advanced skilling model in chronic disease management with specialists from the Princess Alexandra Hospital Endocrinology Unit with a view to further expansion to both Cardiovascular and Renal Units.  This service is known as the Brisbane South Complex Diabetes Service.
  • The post seeks GP Registrars, who have completed at least six months of general practice terms, who would like to develop special clinical skills in this growing area in general practice, as well as learn more about the operation of the new MBS team care items and practice re-design around chronic disease management.
  • Part-time positions may be available, with the specialist clinic held in Tuesday morning session which currently equates to 0.1 FTE.
  • The Brisbane South Complex Diabetes Service provides flexibility with hours and could offer additional sessions to the GP Registrar if required. This can be negotiated with the successful applicant.
  • This is a community-based Extended Skills position, therefore GP Registrars must have completed at least six months (FTE) GP Terms prior to undertaking this post, and RACGP Censor approval may be necessary depending on the GP Registrar's stage of training.

Division of Mental Health, Royal Brisbane & Women's Hospital
  • A half-time position offering experience and training in mental health has previously been is available at the Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital, Division of Mental Health.
  • The position is Principal House Officer/Registrar level and is accredited with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists for training.
  • The position is located at Somerset Villas, Community Care Unit, Rosemount Campus.  This is a slow stream mental health rehabilitation unit, working in a community model.  It would provide the opportunity to increase knowledge and skills in the assessment and management of individuals with a chronic mental illness, as well as providing experience working in a multi-disciplinary community model mental health team.

Aged Care - GP Partners (Brisbane North GP Division)

  • GP Partners encompasses a large number of general practices in the Brisbane North area.   Several of these practices provide extensive services to their local aged care facilities and have expressed interest in hosting GP Registrars.
  • Working in Aged Care can provide excellent experience in a broad range of medical problems.  The exposure to working within multi-disciplinary teams, the provision of ongoing care and chronic disease management are valuable general practice learning experiences.
  • Sessions would be shared between the nominated general practice and its associated aged care facilities.
  • In the RACF setting the GP Registrar would conduct regular clinics, attend to acute medical problems, perform medical admissions of new patients and develop a working knowledge of Medicare incentives such as Comprehensive Medical Assessments, Case Conferencing & Residential Medication Management Reviews.
  • This is a 6 month full-time or equivalent part-time position and may be suitable for approval as a community based Extended Skills position, therefore GP Registrars must have completed at least 6 months (FTE) GP terms prior to undertaking the post. RACGP Censor approval may be necessary depending on the GP Registrar's stage of training.

Dermatology/Skin - Logan Skin Clinic/Surgery Centre
  • Logan Skin Clinic/Logan Surgery Centre has positions available in 2011 for GP Registrars with an interest in the specialty of skin cancer/dermatology.
  • On-site training will be provided to ensure that applicants meet the criteria required. Rooms and facilities necessary for this person to undertake their practice in this specialised area will be provided.
  • The Clinic will negotiate a contractual arrangement to suit both parties. Appropriate supervision is provided to the the GP Registrars.
  • GP Registrars interested in undertaking this position as an Extended Skills post (community post), must have completed at least six months in general practice terms, and meet the selection criteria of the Clinic.

Geriatrics - Nambour Hospital
  • Nambour General Hospital has a Community Geriatrics Registrar position available from July 2011 (and potentially in future years) for GP Registrars with an interest in aged care.
  • This is a rotation that has been previously offered mainly to general medical registrars and Advanced Trainees in Geriatric Medicine within the hospital system. However, this position could also be suitable and beneficial to GP Registrars in the form of an Extended Skills placement. 
  • The position is based at Nambour General Hospital on the Sunshine Coast and involves interacting with a number of teams (including inpatient teams) based at Nambour and Caloundra Hospitals. However, as the job title suggests, it also involves work in the community in the form of private home and residential aged care facility visits. Because this is a relatively new position, the finer details do change with time but the information in the position overview will remain the same.

  • Whilst it is not mandatory for GP Registrars interested in undertaking this position to have completed any general practice terms, previous experience in general practice would be beneficial. This position is suitable for a more experienced Registrar, with at least 18 months hospitals terms completed.

Medical Education Registrar (MER) - Nambour Hospital

  • Nambour General Hospital has created a Medical Education Registrar position which may be suitable for a GP Registrar to undertake as part of an Extended Skills post or possibly as part of an Advanced Rural Skills post.
  • The MER position enables Registrars to gain experience in the area of medical education and for the role to provide the Registrar with the opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills in medical education to prepare them for future roles as teachers, GP Supervisors, medical educators, or academic GPs.
  • This position is advertised as a 12 month full-time position, however, a GP Registrar may be able to negotiate undertaking it as a half-time MER + half-time GP position.
  • Nambour Hospital is located in an ASGC-RA 2 areas, so may be undertaken by GP Registrars on their Rural or General Pathway.
  • GP Registrars interested in undertaking this position as an Extended Skills post, must have completed at least 12 months (FTE) in general practice terms, and meet the selection criteria as outlined in the position description.

Pain Medicine Post - Logan Central Community Health Centre

  • The Persistent Pain Group at Logan Central Community Health Centre is offering a position which may be suitable for GP Registrars to count towards their training as Extended Skills.
  • The purpose of this role is to gain familiarity of the management of complex pain patients within a multidisciplinary framework. The GP Registrar would be under the supervision of specialist pain medicine physicians.  The Metro South Persistent Pain Management Service deals predominantly with chronic non-cancer pain but the GP Registrar would be exposed to some acute and cancer pain patients. 
  • This position is open to GP Registrars who have completed their first year of GP terms (FTE).
  • The position is offered at 3 sessions per week for 12 months, however applications for 6 month posts will be considered. It is ideally suited to those working in general practice concurrently but may be of interest as a stand-alone position for part-time Registrars only wishing to work 3 sessions per week.
  • GP Registrars wishing to undertake this post must be eligible for a Medicare Provider Number to refer, request and provide Medicare rebatable services.   As this position is located in an ASGC-RA 1 area, only GP Registrars enrolled on the General Pathway would be eligible to apply.
