Rural and Remote Medicine Training

The General Practice training community strongly encourages all GP Registrars to consider training for rural and remote medicine.  You can train for rural and remote medicine whether you are on the General or Rural Pathway.

CSQTC wishes to assist and support each GP Registrar with rural interest to gain experience and confidence in rural Practice.  It is not essential to achieve any additional qualifications, but CSQTC highly recommends that those with rural interest should work towards either or both of the rural qualifications that are available.  With careful planning, these qualifications can mostly be achieved during General Practice training time.  There are, of course, additional activities required both educationally and through work experience. Download our brochure to the left for more information.

The key to successful preparation and training for rural and remote medicine is to work in high quality rural Practices with Trainers who are excellent role models.  CSQTC is fortunate to have an excellent group of rural Practices available to GP Registrars.  The rural qualifications are:

  • Fellowship of the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine, conferred by the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM)
  • Fellowship in Advanced Rural General Practice, conferred by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP)
Information on the training opportunities available from each College can be found on their websites and educational resources to support Registrars undertaking rural training can be accessed on their respective online learning platforms, as detailed below.

It is essential that GP Registrars plan all aspects of rural training individually with CSQTC staff, especially at Training Adviser meetings.  CSQTC has two Associate Directors of Medical Education - Rural, who are also available to discuss any aspect of rural and remote training with Registrars and Trainers.  In this way, we can help you to maximise the rural learning experience and to access all the support available.  Our Associate Directors of Medical Education - Rural can be contacted through the South West Queensland District Office and the Central Queensland/Fraser Coast District Office
