Remuneration for GP Registrars' educational release time - FAQs

Does a Practice pay a GP Registrar for educational release time?
  • When a Registrar is undertaking their 1st year full-time equivalent General Practice/Primary Rural and Remote Training placements, educational release along with teaching, administration and home visits are all part of normal hours for a full-time GP Registrar.  Therefore, the practice does pay the Registrar while attending.  Registrars are required to attend a minimum of 100 hours of educational release in their 1st year full-time equivalent of General Practice/Primary Rural and Remote Training.
  • There is presently no obligation for practices to pay GP Registrars who attend educational activities during their 2nd year.  However, Registrars are required to attend a minimum of 25 hours of educational release in their 2nd year and onwards of full-time equivalent General Practice/Primary Rural and Remote Training.

What happens when a Registrar has not completed their minimum educational release hours during their 1st year GP term placements?

  • Where a Registrar has completed their 1st year full-time equivalent of General Practice/Primary and Rural and Remote Training placements but has fallen short of their minimum required educational release hours (100 hours), they will need to make this up later in their training, during their 2nd year and onwards.
