CSQTC First-Timers at the RDAQ Annual Conference CSQTC's experience at the Rural Doctors Association of Queensland (RDAQ) 20th Anniversary Conference last weekend was extremely positive and the interactions with a variety of participants was rewarding. Conference delegates ranged from RDAQ members and hierarchy, to GP Registrars and Medical students and a host of other stakeholders and trade exhibitors. Dr Jim Finn, the outgoing RDAQ President and newly nominated CSQTC Board Director, opened the Conference. The Conference launch was further enhanced by a performance from the Queensland National Ballet and an address from keynote speaker Professor John Pearn was particularly impressive and inspiring. Staff from CSQTC proudly flew the GP Training banner and we were impressed by the recognition received from Medical Students, prospective Rural Generalist Trainees and Trainers who visited our promotional booth. In between attending conference sessions during the day, Julie and Jenny looked after the booth to ensure that we had a permanent presence in the trade exhibition over the two and a half days. Dr Bill Lang and Dr Danika Fietz were supportive in their respective roles and CEO Peter Harrison took the opportunity to network with associates and catch up with many of our rural Trainers and Stakeholders. A large contingent of Medical Students from a variety of universities around Australia attended this year's conference. Their presence contributed to a light hearted and youthful feel and provided the interesting prospect of a new generation being lured to the attractiveness of Rural Medicine. CSQTC sponsored three of these Medical Students – Narelle Lintern from the University of Queensland, Emma Hogan from Bond University and Lars Schneider from Griffith University. Dr Bill Lang also very generously sponsored a Medical Student, Alistair Hamilton from the University of Queensland. All students were incredibly appreciative of the support they received via these sponsorships, which is summed up by Alistair's comments that sponsorships for conferences such as the RDAQ Conference is an investment in the future of the rural workforce. Two of our GP Registrars who expressed their interest in attending the Conference were also sponsored to attend the event. We look forward to hearing more from these GP Registrars regarding their experiences over the coming weeks. CSQTC's Board Chair Adj. Prof. Mary Mahoney and CSQTC staff met with our sponsored Medical Students and GP Registrars over breakfast on Sunday morning. We were also delighted to be joined by several of our rural GP Trainers including Dr Pam Turnock from St George, Drs Sue and Matt Masel from Goondiwindi, Dr Rosemary Geraghty from Roma and Dr Ewen McPhee from Emerald. In total we had a group of 22 and we all appreciated this opportunity to catch up with colleagues from the bush and to mix with our sponsored Students and GP Registrars on a more personal level. As part of our trade exhibition, CSQTC ran a competition based on all the colour's of CSQTC's Geographic Training Nodes. This provided great hilarity as we uncovered the many variations and colour combinations that can be derived from one laser printed map. The competition prize was also based on our Training Nodes - a hamper which included a sample of something special from each of our rural Nodes, ranging from Capricornia Coast coffee, to a gorgeous floral arrangement representing Toowoomba & Surrounds. The lucky winner of our Quiz was Andrew, one of the Medical Student delegates. CSQTC would like to thank the RDAQ for this wonderful opportunity to be involved in their annual Conference. It was an extremely well run conference, food and refreshments were plentiful and most of all it was refreshing to see such a large number of young doctors-to-be with such enthusiasm for rural medicine. Stay tuned for future editions of Consortium Chatter, where we will give you some more highlights of the Conference, showcase what our sponsored GP Registrars and Medical Students had to say of their experiences and of course there will be some photos. The 'BIG' Node Workshop for GP Trainers The BIG (Brisbane North, South, Ipswich and Logan/Gold Coast) Node GP Trainers workshop was held at Rydges Hotel in Brisbane last week. Twenty-four GP Trainers from Level 2 and 2+ Practices attended. The format was very relaxed and interactive. We looked at a case of Consultation Interruptus and discussed varying methods for Trainers to address issues arising from such situations. Feedback from the session was very positive. A further workshop is being planned for later in the year. Many thanks to all who helped coordinate this event. Dr Peter McKain, Senior Medical Educator & Node Medical Educator - Brisbane South GP Registrar 2 Day Workshop at Bardon Once again, over 60 GP Registrars and 18 presenters attended Bardon for the second of four 2 day workshops for GP Registrars undertaking their first year of general practice placements. Topics covered ranged from Dermatology, Mens and Wopmen’s Health, Paediatrics to Emergency Medicine, Mental Health and Aboriginal Health. GP Registrars had time to renew acquaintances and socialise during breaks in this workshop. Thanks to all involved in ensuring a satisfactory and educational event. Dr Peter McKain, Senior Medical Educator & Node Medical Educator - Brisbane South Gladstone Hospital was the host of our latest AGPT Information Seminar last Friday 5 June 2009. Dr Michael Donohue, GP Trainer and CSQTC Medical Educator from Yeppoon delivered the CSQTC segment of the Seminar and an RRQC GP Registrar co-presented the session. There were 14 doctors that attended this session, which was reported as a very good turnout for hospital of Gladstone's size. There was a lot of positive feedback about the Seminar, with a couple of the doctors showing strong interest in general practice. We would like to thank the Medical Education staff at Gladstone Hospital for their co-operation and we look forward to visiting again next year. This is that last of our dedicated AGPT Hospital Information Seminars and we would like to thank all who have been involved, including Hospital Medical Education Unit staff members, speakers and GP Registrar presenters. Dr Nam Tran will be delivering clinical education sessions at QEII Hospital today and another at the Mater Hospital on 23 June 2009 - please see article below.
